Big Gear Shift – Hallam

The subject is narrower than most Big Things attempt, and that is the interesting part. A giant tap says plumbing to everyone. A giant coat hanger says wardrobes. A gear shift says something considerably more specific – not cars in general but the transmission in particular – and it is legible only to people who already know what they are looking at.

That narrowness is a defensible strategy. A transmission specialist does not need to attract general traffic; it needs to be found by people whose gearbox is failing, who are already looking for exactly this. An object that means nothing to most drivers and everything to the right one is well aimed.

Automatic shift gates are also a good form – the stepped P-R-N-D pattern is instantly recognisable to anyone who drives, and it gives a sculpture a shape rather than a lump.

Hallam is trade and light industrial country on Melbourne's outer south-east, along the same corridor that holds the wheelbarrow at Clyde and the javelins at Casey Fields.

Because it sits on an operating commercial site, access follows the business.
