FIELD GUIDE
The story
A fishing rod is not an obvious candidate for monumental sculpture. That is more or less the point of Fishing for Humour, which takes the most ordinary object on the water's edge and blows it up to a scale that makes you look at it properly.
The work is by Silvio Apponyi, and it was made on site during the inaugural Wyaralong Sculpture Festival and Symposium in 2015. Symposium is the operative word: rather than commissioning finished pieces and trucking them in, the festival brought sculptors to the dam to work in the open over a set period, which is why the collection at Lake Wyaralong reads as a group of responses to one place rather than an assortment of purchases.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Fishing for Humour turns an everyday fishing rod into a deliberately monumental public artwork, part of the sculpture collection at Lake Wyaralong Sculpture Park. Current sculpture-park material continues to list the work among the park's pieces.
ACCESS
Navigate to Lake Wyaralong Sculpture Park and the adjacent Meebun Day Use Area. Use the established recreation-area parking, then walk through the sculpture park; the current pin represents the park rather than the exact artwork position.
