The Big Cows

Colour is the whole trick. A giant cow is one of the most common oversized objects in Australia and New Zealand, and almost all of them are black-and-white Friesians or red-brown Herefords. Making them chocolate-coloured converts the animal from livestock into confectionery – the cow as the source of milk, milk as the source of milk chocolate, chocolate as the reason for the building. It is a much better idea than a giant chocolate bar would have been.

The siting is shrewd. Phillip Island receives an enormous volume of visitors for the penguin parade and the motorcycle circuit, and almost all of them cross the bridge at Newhaven. A business at that point catches essentially the whole flow.

The factory is a substantial operating attraction rather than a shop with a sculpture out the front, which is why the record marks access as following the venue.

The island's better-known Big Thing is the koala beside Rusty Water Brewery at Cowes, further up the road, and the two are quite separate.
