FIELD GUIDE
The story
The pub's signature dish is the Big Cow burger, so there is a giant concrete one outside.
It belongs to a collection. Gordon Rose made a series of oversized concrete sculptures for the Te Poi Country Tavern near Matamata – the six-metre cow, the calf positioned for photographs, a Big Kiwi and this hamburger – and the effect of encountering several at once is considerably stranger than any one of them alone. A single giant cow is a pub sign; a scattered group including a burger and a kiwi is a small, committed body of work by one person at one address.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The sculpture is one of Gordon Rose’s distinct oversized works created for the Big Cow pub complex. Contemporary specialist documentation continues to describe it outside the tavern, while current 2026 listings confirm the tavern itself is operating.
ACCESS
Route to Te Poi Country Tavern at 11 Te Poi Road, the current operating hospitality site hosting the outdoor Big Things. Use the tavern as the vehicle destination; the stored landmark geometry is not a parking instruction.
