FIELD GUIDE

The story

The painted dairy cows in the front paddock at Ashgrove have been singled out for description in Tasmanian parliamentary material, which is a fairly unusual distinction for a herd of fibreglass Friesians beside the Bass Highway.
It is deserved. Elizabeth Town sits in the dairy country of Tasmania's north, and Ashgrove is a working cheese business that opens itself to visitors – the Dairy Door is open seven days, and cheesemakers can be watched through glass panels on weekdays, with interpretation panels explaining the process. The big cow, and the painted herd around it, mark the turn-off.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Burnie City Council currently lists the Big Cow at Ashgrove Cheese Factory as a regional Big Thing. Ashgrove Dairy Door remains open seven days and current Tasmanian parliamentary material describes the painted dairy cows in the front paddock as iconic.
ACCESS
The Big Cow is at the Ashgrove Cheese visitor site at 6173 Bass Highway, Elizabeth Town. Navigate to the Dairy Door and use normal customer access and onsite parking; the stored attraction point represents the Ashgrove site rather than a surveyed individual cow sculpture.
