The BIG Chocolate Bar

Blacksmithing is not how Big Things are usually made. The standard method is fibreglass over a frame, or concrete render, or moulded plastic – processes suited to smooth curves and bright paint. Forged metal is slower, heavier, and produces something with a different surface entirely. Choosing it for a subject as soft and glossy as chocolate is a deliberately awkward pairing, and the tension is what makes the object worth looking at rather than merely reading.

A named local maker is also uncommon in this catalogue. Most commercial forecourt pieces arrive from a supplier with no attribution at all, and a shop crediting the tradesman who made its landmark is doing something the record can preserve.

Chocolate Grove is a working chocolate business, and the bar's function is the same as every roadside object's: be visible, be unambiguous, and make people remember where the shop is.

Carrum Downs is outer south-eastern Melbourne, industrial and residential rather than scenic, which puts this with the suburban retail landmarks – the Wantirna South watermelon, the Baxter shoe further down the peninsula – rather than with the regional produce monuments.
