FIELD GUIDE
The story
Glenrowan is famous for one thing, and it is not fruit. The town where Ned Kelly's siege ended in 1880 has built an entire visitor economy on those few hours, and a giant cherry near the highway was always going to be the second thing anybody noticed.
It was nonetheless a reasonable subject. The King Valley and the country around Glenrowan and Wangaratta grow stone fruit and wine grapes on the alluvial flats below the Warby Ranges, and roadside orchards along the Hume have sold cherries to passing traffic for generations. The cherry was advertising a real local crop.
