FIELD GUIDE
The story
Two figures at the showgrounds, commemorating the people and the cultures of the Burdekin sugar industry.
That second word carries the weight. Hand cane cutting in North Queensland was done overwhelmingly by migrant labour – Italians above all, and also Maltese, Spanish, Greek and Yugoslav men – through the middle of the twentieth century. The Burdekin's Italian population is substantial and long established, and the district's character, its farms and its family names come directly from that migration.
