Big Can – Huonville

The Huon Valley was Australia's apple heartland. Tasmania was the Apple Isle on the strength of this country, exporting enormous volumes to Britain until the United Kingdom joined the European Community in 1973 and the trade collapsed almost overnight. Orchards were bulldozed under a government tree-pull scheme, and the valley has spent fifty years finding other things to do – cider, cherries, salmon, tourism.

Cider is the relevant one. Huon apples now largely go into it, which makes a beverage can on the local pub less arbitrary than it first appears, though the record does not assert what the can depicts.

Roof-mounted drink containers are a substantial category here – the Koumala XXXX can on its painted tank, the Cobar beer can, the Kotara tower reskinned in 2026 – and pub objects are consistently among the most durable in the collection, because the landmark is how travellers find the pub.
