FIELD GUIDE

The story

The giant PBR brake shoes at Rob Roy are refugees. They were rescued from the Templestowe Hillclimb, a Melbourne motorsport venue that no longer runs, and re-erected beside the start line at Rob Roy in November 2009.
That rescue is the story. Motorsport venues accumulate enormous trackside advertising – tyre companies, oil brands, brake manufacturers – and when a circuit closes it is normally scrapped without a second thought, because it is signage for businesses that have moved on. Somebody at Rob Roy looked at a pair of oversized brake shoes at a dying venue and understood they had become historical objects rather than advertisements.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The Big Brake Shoes are a pair of giant PBR brake shoes standing beside the start line at Rob Roy Hillclimb, an active motorsport venue in Smiths Gully.
ACCESS
The Big Brake Shoes are at Rob Roy Hillclimb, 375 Clintons Road, Smiths Gully, a gated motorsport venue. Rob Roy's spectator information describes event-day entry: spectator gates open from 8:30am, the entry fee is paid at the gatehouse, and parking is free in the venue car parks. No public access or public-road viewing point outside events is documented, so everyday direct navigation is withheld; visit only during a published event or with venue permission.
