The story
The bowling pin outside Maryborough Tenpin Bowl is a Toowoomba object. It was relocated from there, and restored in 2020.
A giant bowling pin is about as direct as commercial signage gets, and it belongs to a specific mid-century American export: the tenpin alley as a piece of pop architecture, with oversized pins, arrows, starbursts and neon announcing it from the road. Australia imported the sport and a good deal of the visual language with it during the bowling boom of the 1960s, and the surviving oversized pins around the country are the last fragments of that style.
What makes this one worth recording is that it was moved rather than scrapped. When a bowling centre closes, its signage almost never survives; it is specific to a business that no longer exists and worth nothing to anybody. A pin that travelled from Toowoomba to Maryborough was acquired deliberately by another centre that wanted it, which means somebody valued it as an object rather than as an asset.
The 2020 restoration is the other half of that. Repainting a large fibreglass sculpture is not cheap, and a business that pays for it is making a statement about intending to keep the thing.
Maryborough is a Queensland heritage town on the Mary River, better known for its colonial streetscape and as the birthplace of P. L. Travers, the author of Mary Poppins. A giant bowling pin is not the town's headline attraction, and it does not need to be.
When the pin was made, by whom, and which Toowoomba centre it originally served are not established in the record.
