FIELD GUIDE
The story
Galena, on the short Kansas stretch of Route 66, has a newer arrival among the road's giants. Big A the Texaco Giant, a fibreglass Muffler Man, was installed outside Gearhead Curios on 8 September 2024. The shop is a souvenir shop at 520 S. Main Street in a 1939 Texaco filling station that, according to Route 66 News, its current owner acquired in 2018, and Route 66 Roadtrip's 2026 listing describes it as still operating.
The figure was commissioned by the shop and made by Enchanted Castle Studios, the studio of artist Mark Cline, which has made other new Muffler Men, including Buck Atom in Tulsa according to Route 66 News. KOAM reported on the day of the installation that Cline was building it from the design of a rare 22-foot waving giant originally made by International Fiberglass, but with a regular Muffler Man head. Roadside America says the body is molded from the 2nd Amendment Cowboy Muffler Man in Amarillo, Texas, and the head from a Paul Bunyan Muffler Man, with a goatee and painted sideburns added to resemble the shop's owner, and that one arm waves like a Texaco Big Friend while the other holds a custom-made wrench. Roadside America describes the 1960s Texaco Big Friends as International Fiberglass service-station attendants and says almost all were later destroyed.
