The story

A 27-foot Tin Man stands at a trailhead in Kentucky's Bernheim Forest. "Heart of the Forest" is at the Jackson-Yoe trailhead in Bernheim Forest and Arboretum at Clermont, and Spectrum News 1 reported its unveiling on 25 July 2025. It was designed by Bill Secunda, a Pennsylvania-based sculptor whom Spectrum describes as known for lifelike metal work; the report says he has been a three-time Top Ten finalist at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids and twice won Best in Show at Disney's Festival of the Masters. Bernheim says the figure draws on the Tin Man who believed he lacked a heart, and on its Must-Sees page describes it as symbolising the healing power of nature as it overlooks restored wetlands, pollinator fields and forest hollows. President and CEO Mark K. Wourms said the character's "journey from disconnection to heartfelt awareness mirrors our evolving relationship with forests." Bernheim said the piece is part of its permanent art collection. It joins the Forest Giants, three sculptures by Danish artist Thomas Dambo completed in 2019 from repurposed and natural materials: Mama Loumari, Little Nis and Little Elina. Bernheim itself was founded in 1929 by Isaac W. Bernheim and covers more than 16,000 acres with about 40 miles of trails. Bernheim lists a recommended admission of $15 per car, with free entry for members, and said in July 2025 that the Tin Man can be seen daily from 7 a.m. until an hour before the forest closes.
