FIELD GUIDE

The story

A fibreglass cow known as the Belle of Saint Mary's stands near the entrance to Hameau Farm, a dairy farm and girls' summer camp near Belleville, Pennsylvania. The Lewistown Sentinel (November 2023) and VisitPA (October 2023) give her height as 13 feet; Atlas Obscura (November 2025) says 15 feet and about 1,200 pounds. The Lewistown Sentinel wrote in November 2023 that the farm is a working dairy that has also been a summer camp for girls aged 7 to 14 since 1996, with a herd of Ayrshire cows, Jacob sheep, pigs, goats and free-range chickens. In October 2023 the state tourism site VisitPA listed the cow third in a roundup of 27 roadside attractions, calling it "the perfect Instagram-photo op" for people arriving at the farm. A 2014 Progressive Dairy feature had already described a "larger-than-life Ayrshire cow statue" as a landmark for Hameau Farm. The farm's own website today describes a dairy farm in central Pennsylvania that doubles as a sleepaway camp for girls for eight weeks of summer. Atlas Obscura says the cow, also called the Dairyland Cow or Queen of the Herd, came from a dairy farm in St. Marys and stood in front of a milk and ice cream outlet from 1968 until the 2000s. It then stood at a Reedsville dairy business before moving to Belleville in 2012. Atlas Obscura says it has been a local landmark for more than 50 years. Anyone planning a stop should treat the farm as a private working property and check with it first.
