FIELD GUIDE

The story

Along half a mile of Lancaster Avenue in downtown Fort Worth, six tall stainless steel sculptures mark a street once shadowed by an elevated freeway. Artist Cliff Garten’s Avenue of Light, dated 2009, stands in the median from Lamar Street to Main/Commerce Street. His studio gives each of the six as 36 feet high, 8 feet wide and 4 feet deep.
The setting has its own story. Lancaster Avenue lay beneath an elevated section of Interstate 30 until the freeway was relocated in 2001, which allowed the city to reclaim the historic street and preserve several classical and Art Deco buildings. Garten took his cue from the Art Deco details of the nearby Texas & Pacific Terminal, interpreting them as plates used to build the sculptures. The Fort Worth Public Art Program says they are made of stacked, laser-cut stainless plates drawing on zigzag motifs on the facades of the terminal and warehouse buildings.
