FIELD GUIDE
The story
At 510 feet long, the Ark Encounter at Williamstown is a ship-shaped timber building with no water to float on. Answers in Genesis, the creationist organisation behind it, took its proportions from Genesis 6, which gives 300 cubits long, 50 wide and 30 high. On its website the organisation converts that, assuming a royal cubit, to approximately 510 feet by 85 feet by 51 feet, and calls the result the largest freestanding timber structure in the world.
The Guardian, reporting just before the opening in July 2016, described a hull of radiata pine imported from New Zealand and interior columns made from tree trunks harvested in Washington and Montana. It put the cost at around $100 million and said the ark had been assembled in less than two years. WCPO reported that it opened on 7 July 2016 and instantly attracted crowds from across the country.
