FIELD GUIDE

The story

Austin's Mueller neighbourhood, built on the site of the city's former airport, is home to a steel spider that Tribeza described in 2021 as perched over a walking path.
The sculpture, "Arachnophillia" in the artist's spelling, is by Houston artist Dixie Friend Gay. Her website dates it to 2008 and lists welded Corten and stainless steel, fabrication with Blumenthal Sheet Metal and a commission from Catellus Development Corporation, for the Southwest Greenway at Mueller. The metal was expected to rust to orange over time, while the purple eyes and the blue and turquoise eggs stay glossy.
