FIELD GUIDE
The story
A seated human figure built entirely from letters stands in Charlotte's First Ward: Ainsa III, by the Barcelona-based sculptor Jaume Plensa.
UNC Charlotte reported that Queen's Table, an anonymous group that had previously donated six other sculptures to Charlotte's public spaces, dedicated the work at UNC Charlotte Center City on Tuesday 15 September 2015. It was created in Barcelona and Queen's Table commissioned it. According to the university, it is made of die-cut stainless-steel letters from nine alphabets from around the world, each chosen by the artist for its aesthetic beauty and hand-assembled into the silhouette of a seated figure. The university presents it as embodying Plensa's idea of a universal language. The stone base comes from the town of Ainsa near the Spanish Pyrenees, a place the artist often visits.
