FIELD GUIDE

The story

Walk down the Banita Creek Trail in Nacogdoches and a giant folding lawn chair appears in a small meadow. According to The East Texas Weekend in April 2026, the metal sculpture is about 8 feet tall and is a memorial to Dr Ab Abernethy, a university professor known for developing the Lanana and Banita Creek trails.
KTRE reported in August 2016 that the city had unveiled the chair at what many people call Ab's Park. Jeff Brewer, a sculptor and professor at Stephen F. Austin State University, designed and built it, and KTRE noted that its colours were inspired by the university's. Trail chairman Clayton Collier said Abernethy would go down to the creek with his machete and his chair, clear the trail, then relax in the chair thinking about the next project.
