FIELD GUIDE
The story
Along Amarillo’s Route 66 corridor, a fiberglass cowboy carries a political message. Roadside America describes him as a Muffler Man “Glenn Goode variant” with a standard-style head but non-standard arms and legs, standing at 2601 Hope Road. Silly America says Muffler Men stand 14 to 25 feet tall and were built from 1963 to 1972 by International Fiberglass. His shirt reads “2nd Amendment Cowboy,” and Silly America reports a plaque in front reciting the amendment, with a row of pastel Cadillacs behind him carrying mannequins of Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson and John Wayne. Per Roadside America, visitors in 2004 saw him outside the new Country Barn BBQ & Steaks on I-40, and a 2004 tip says he had earlier stood in Sanger, Texas, with bullet holes that were patched. Roadside America and Silly America say he was auctioned in 2014 and moved here. A 2024 visitor noted revolvers at his feet as a recent addition, and the Los Angeles Times (via Stars and Stripes, May 2026) mentions “a pair of big pistols at his feet.”
